Today’s mobile terminals do not have a common standard for the multimedia capabilities such as colour depth, screen sizes, video enabling etc. This inconsistency can in some cases create problems when transmitting multimedia, resulting in a lower quality perception and a heavy workload on customer services organisations. The problems will normally occur when the subscriber information in the MMSC is not updated in real-time. Today, no real-time information on the currently used handset type is available from the network. Subscriber information is usually retrieved from the MMSC internal Subscriber & Operator Services (SOS) directory only, i.e. no external directory is used. Multimedia problems experienced by subscribers include: Customer behaviours: - Switch of handsets
- Between multimedia enabled and legacy
- Between multimedia enabled with different characteristics
- Test of multimedia handsets
- Upgrade of multimedia handsets
These scenarios lead to multimedia services provided incorrectly if the subscriber at that time has a handset with other capabilities, causing customer dissatisfaction and trouble tickets only due to handset related inconsistencies. Solution To support the carriers solving the problems as described, our automated device management system is probe-based, capturing necessary signalling information and providing updates towards MMSC’s, OTA systems and/or Service providers in real-time about changes of handsets. Furthermore our automated device management system allows the carrier to perform handset specific promotion.
